Hidden Animal Ingredients
Suppose you were in your local market and you picked up an item and read the ingredients label. Now suppose that label said "this product contains bones, cartilage, tendons, and skin from cows and pigs." Would you buy that product and feed it to your family? Probably not. But if it said "this product contains gelatin." Would you buy it? Of course. You do it every time you buy jello or marshmallows. Well, do you know what gelatin is made of? Cow and pig bones, cartilage, tendons, and skin.
Food manufacturers know they can not tell you in plain language what they put in the food you buy because you probably would not buy it. So they have devised hundreds of disguise names for animal ingredients that would not sound very appetizing to you. And, it works. Following is a list of some of those ingredients.
* Albumin - Egg whites, animal blood and milk.
* Anchovies - Fish found in Worcestershire sauce, Caesar salad dressing, pizza topping.
* Animal shortening, Butter, Suet, Lard - In packaged cookies and crackers, refried beans, tortillas, ready-made pie crusts.
* Calcium stearate - From cows or hogs. In garlic salt, vanilla, meat tenderizers, salad-dressing mixes.
* Capric acid (decanoic acid) - Animal fats in ice cream, candy, baked goods, chewing gum, liquor.
* Casein (caseinate) - A milk protein found in cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese, and sour cream.
* Clarifying agent - Derived from a number of animal sources. Used to filter wine, vinegar, beer, fruit juice, soft drinks.
* Gelatin - Protein from bones, cartilage, tendons, and skin of animals. Found in marshmallows, yogurt, frosted cereals, jello and molded salads.
* Glucose (dextrose) - Made of fruits or animal tissues and fluids. In baked goods, soft drinks, candies, frosting.
* Glycerides (monoglyceride, diglyceride, and triglyceride - from animal fats or plants. In processed foods
* Isinglass - Gelatin from air bladder of fish. Used to clarify alcoholic beverages and in some jellied desserts.
* Lactic acid - from milk. Used in cheese, yogurt, pickles, olives, sauerkraut, candy, frozen desserts, chewing gum, fruit preserves
* Lactose (saccharum lactin, D-lactose Milk sugar) - in processed foods such as baby formulas and candies.
* Lactylic stearate - Tallow, other animal fats and oils used in vanilla flavoring, chewing gum, baked goods, beverages, candy
* Lanolin - Waxy fat from sheep's wool used in chewing gum, ointments, cosmetics, waterproof coatings.
* Lard - Rendered and clarified pork fat. In baked goods.
* Lecithin - from animal tissues, plants, lentils, and egg yolks used to preserve, emulsify, and moisturize food. In cereal, candy, chocolate, baked goods, margarine, vegetable oil sprays.
* Lutein - from marigolds or egg yolks. Used as a food coloring.
* Myristic acid (tetradecanoic acid) - Animal fats. Found in chocolate, ice cream, candy, jelled desserts, baked goods.
* Natural flavorings - could be from meat or other animal products. Used in processed and packaged foods.
* Oleic acid (oleinic acid)- Animal tallow used in butter, cheese, vegetable fats and oils, baked goods, candy, ice cream, beverages
* Palmatic acid - Animal or vegetable fats. Used in baked goods, butter and cheese
* Pancreatin (pancreatic extract)- from cows or hogs. Used in digestive aids.
* Pepsin - Enzyme from pig's stomachs. Used to make cheese.
* Propolis - produced by bees. Food supplement and ingredient in some toothpaste.
* Rennin (Rennet) - from a young calf's stomach. Used in cheese and junket.
* Royal jelly - Produced by bees. Used as a natural food and nutrient supplement.
* Sodium stearoyl lactylate - May be from cows, hogs, animal milk. Used in cake, pudding, pancake mixes, baked goods, margarine.>br /> * Stearic acid (octadecenoic acid) - From animal fats and oils. Used in vanilla flavoring, chewing gum, baked goods, beverages, candy
* Suet - Fat from kidneys and loins of animals. Used in margarine, mincemeat, pastries.
* Tallow - Solid fat of sheep and cattle. Used in waxed paper, margarine, soaps, crayons, candles, rubber, cosmetics.
* Vitamin B12 - Vitamin found in all animal products. Vegans should look for the synthetic form (cyanocobalamin or cobalamin on labels).
* Whey - a product of cheese making. Found in crackers, breads, cakes.
