Click here to print page.
This fried tofu appetizer is crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Serve it hot right from the frying pan. It really loses a lot of flavor when cold.
Ingredients
* 1 can vegan beer (Budweiser and Bud Lite are vegan friendly)* 1/2 block tofu, extra firm
* 1 cup of cornmeal
* 1 1/2 cup unbleached all purpose flour
* 1 tablespoon paprika
* 1 tablespoon garlic powder
* 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt (or to taste)
* 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
* 3/4 cup canola oil for frying (or your favorite)
Directions
1. Combine cornmeal and spices in a large mixing bowl, set aside.2. Put the vegan beer in a large bowl and slowly mix in the flour until you get a batter (like pancake batter). Set aside.
3. Place the tofu on paper towels and squeeze out excess liquid.
4. Slice the tofu into 1/4 inch thick pieces.
5. Dip the tofu slices into the beer batter, coating well on both sides.
6. Then dredge the dipped tofu in the cornmeal/spice mix covering well on both sides.
7. Heat the canola oil on medium high heat and fry the tofu until golden brown, drain on paper towels. Fry in batches if necessary to prevent crowding in frying pan.
